Andrew Schmachtenberger, a pioneer of St. Joseph County, died Saturday after an illness of one week with pneumonia, death occuring at the residence of his nephew, Lemen Shafer, of Union Township, where he had resided for the last eight years.
Mr. Schmachtenberger was a native of Starke County, Ohio, where he was born November 30, 1826. He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children and was the last of the children to pass away. He came to St. Joseph County in 1869, and this county had since been his home. Nearly all of his relatives have passed away, the principal survivors being the descendents of the late Hiram [Harman] Shafer, of Union township and of Simon Snyder, of Bremen, Indiana.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Union Church in Union township, Rev. Martin Meyers, of the German Lutheran Church of Bremen, will officiate and the burial will be in Union Cemetery, Union Township.
