Bill Billings
William (Bill) Billings of Huron Beach, Ocqueoc, Mich., and formerly of St. Thomas died at Huron Beach Saturday in his 82 year.
Born in St. Thomas, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Billings, he worked as a yardmaster for the Pere Marquette Railway (Chessie System) before he moved from St. Thomas in 1928.
Mr. Billings was a strong, right-handed pitcher wit the St. Thomas Saints and Tom Cats of the Southern Counties and Intercounty Baseball Leagues in the 1920s.
While in St. Thomas, Mr. Billings pitched St. Thomas to several league championships.
Surviving are his wife, Ariel Watson Billings; two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Ariel) Goodridge of Huron Beach, Mich., and Mrs. Harold (Maxine) Hodges of 220 Elm Street, St. Thomas; a son, William Billings Jr. of Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. A son, the late Jack Billings, died in the Second World War.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Age at first marriage: 19. According to his wife, William believed he was born in October of 1894 and didn't find out differently until he applied for social security. In this census of April, 1930, he is listed as age 35. If he believed he was born in October 1894, and he says he was 19 at first marriage, then he was married in 1913; however, this would mean he was married AFTER October of 1913, and Maxine was born in March of that year.
